About

Hello, reader!

Welcome to the Boomtown Legacy blog. My name is Ryan Hilton and I’m a petroleum engineer with Chevron. I’m here to bring you along on my journey as I learn about the fascinating history of oil production in my home state of Pennsylvania.

Background

My interest in petroleum engineering started at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where I earned a B.S. degree in Information Science and Technology. I continued my studies at Penn State University, earning my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Since 2018, I’ve been applying my expertise as a Chevron engineer in Houston, Texas. I contribute to the development and optimization of oil and gas production.

However, this blog will focus mostly on the past. As someone raised in PA, I’m captivated by the origins of the oil industry there, particularly the boom that swept through in the 19th century.

Boomtown Legacy blog

Join me as I explore the stories of the wildcatters, the innovations in early Pennsylvania oil fields, and the lasting legacy of “black gold” in the Keystone State. We’ll look at the personalities behind historic discoveries such as the Drake Well in Titusville. And, of course, we’ll examine the sudden wealth and subsequent economic downfall in these regions as oil production migrated south.

As a Chevron engineer, I’ll be sharing some insights from my perspective as a professional in petroleum engineering, drawing connections between the industry’s past and present. But, mostly, I’ll be learning alongside you, discovering the stories and events that may have been buried in history.
