That Slander
Petroleum Centre Daily Record, March 13, 1871
The Titusville Courier, after publishing the “Sodom and Gomorrah smoky shanty retribution by fire” slander on the businessmen and interests of Petroleum Centre, by “whacking around the bush” endeavors to cast the responsibility of uttering so reprehensible a slander from off the shoulders of the mogul-in-chief1 of that sheet, and place it upon the shoulders of an “occasional correspondent.”

Said correspondent being no less an individual than the regular Oil City reporter, who manages to inflict a dose of flapdoodle two or three times a week on the readers of the Courier, receiving therefore $20 per week and fifteen percent on what job work and advertising patronage he can underbid the printing offices along the creek on. How are you “occasional reporter?”
Another point. The local editor and oil reporter of the Courier, were in town Saturday afternoon, and distinctly stated to more than one person, that the report in question was sent to Titusville by the 6 p.m. freight train Friday. That said report passed through the hands of J. T. H. for revision and was approved and ordered published by him. And that the original report was much more scandalous in its nature than the one published. Out of curiosity we would inquire the name of the truthful G. Washington of that sheet.
The “good people of Petroleum Centre” (now quick, expressed sentiments and opinions do change with some people) would also be pleased to learn his cognomen. However, we suppose the Courier is entitled to crawl out of the smallest hole it can, but it is extremely doubtful if it succeeds in plastering up the “Sodom and Gomorrah” slander after that fashion.
